Why The Northern Health Shield Matters
On April 19, 2026, Give Basic Needs implemented The Northern Health Shield pilot intervention in Kpatinga, Gushegu Municipality, reaching over 1,000 community members with free screenings, vaccination support, deworming, wound care, hygiene support, and preventive medical education.
The results were urgent: 1 in every 15 people tested was living with Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or HIV. This discovery has made preventive medical screening a major focus of our 2026 community outreach work.

The Northern Health Shield: An Integrated Medical & WASH Initiative
The Northern Health Shield is Give Basic Needs’ flagship Medical & WASH initiative, expanding preventive healthcare and clean water access across underserved communities in Northern Ghana.
Through community-based interventions, we provide disease screening, Hepatitis B vaccination, treatment referral, deworming, wound care, menstrual health support, hygiene education, and mechanized borehole development to help communities prevent illness before it becomes a crisis.
- Community Screening & Early Detection – Screening for Malaria, Typhoid, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, and other preventable health conditions.
- Vaccination & Disease Prevention – Hepatitis B vaccination, deworming, Vitamin C distribution, condom distribution, maternal health awareness, and disease prevention education.
- Clean Water & WASH Infrastructure – Mechanized boreholes, hygiene education, menstrual health education, and community-wide WASH interventions.
- Treatment Referral & Community Support – Treatment referral, follow-up support, wound care, sanitary pad distribution, hygiene products, and community health engagement.
