Latest in action: On 27 June 2026, Northern Health Shield reached Bamboli with integrated Medical & WASH support, serving 790 people and expanding access to preventive care in the community.

Why The Northern Health Shield Matters
From Kpatinga to Bamboli, the Northern Health Shield is bringing preventive care directly to rural communities. On April 19, 2026, the pilot reached over 1,000 people in Kpatinga, and on June 27, 2026, the Bamboli event reached 790 community members with integrated Medical & WASH support.
The findings remain urgent: in Bamboli, 1 in 22 people tested positive for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or HIV, while in Kpatinga, 1 in every 15 people screened tested positive for one of these infections.
These results continue to show the need for prevention-first care that brings early screening, vaccination, health education, and follow-up support directly to rural communities.

The Northern Health Shield: An Integrated Medical & WASH Initiative
The Northern Health Shield is Give Basic Needs’ flagship Medical & WASH initiative, expanding preventive healthcare and clean water access across underserved communities in Northern Ghana.
Through community-based interventions, we provide disease screening, Hepatitis B vaccination, treatment referral, deworming, wound care, menstrual health support, hygiene education, and mechanized borehole development to help communities prevent illness before it becomes a crisis.
- Community Screening & Early Detection – Screening for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, malaria, typhoid, and other preventable health conditions, alongside basic medical checks and patient registration.
- Vaccination, Deworming & Disease Prevention – Hepatitis B vaccination, mass deworming, Vitamin C distribution, condom distribution, disease prevention education, and early care-seeking awareness.
- Treatment Referral & Follow-Up Support – Wound care, primary consultations, treatment referrals, follow-up support, and linkage to appropriate care for patients who need further medical attention.
- Clean Water, WASH & Hygiene Support – Mechanized boreholes, safe water education, handwashing education, antibacterial soap distribution, hygiene product support, and community-wide WASH education.
- Menstrual, Maternal & Community Education – Sanitary pad distribution, menstrual hygiene education, maternal health awareness, nutrition education, household hygiene education, and community health engagement.
- Digital Records & Community Mobilization – Digital medical record collection through the Shield App, community entry with local leaders, volunteer coordination, data collection, and community-based follow-up planning.
