On November 22, 2025, Give Basic Needs successfully executed a major community health outreach initiative held at our Tamale office. This event provided free medical screenings, comprehensive health education, and crucial women’s wellness support, aligning with our mission to strengthen community health and expand access to essential services across Northern Ghana.
The success of the event was driven by the dedication of the community itself. Many residents arrived earlier than the designated time, showcasing their proactive concern for their health and well-being. This early enthusiasm, coupled with exceptional participation from the local community and tireless support from volunteers, ensured the outreach was a resounding success.
Fostering Dignity and Empowerment
A key component of the outreach focused on women’s wellness. We proudly distributed sanitary pads. Access to sanitary pads is vital for improving menstrual hygiene management practices and helps young girls maintain regular school attendance with confidence. We secured 30 dedicated volunteers, including medical personnel, whose generous commitment helped us serve the large turnout.
Screenings Unveil Immediate Health Threats
Our medical team offered vital diagnostic screenings to hundreds of participants. These screenings provided crucial health insights necessary for early intervention, often identifying diseases that require immediate attention.
The tests confirmed an ongoing report of a Typhoid outbreak in most parts of Ghana. Typhoid fever remains a significant threat, commonly driven by poor sanitation, unsafe drinking water, and contaminated food sources. Additionally, the comprehensive screenings identified three positive cases of HIV. This highlights the ongoing necessity of grassroots testing efforts, especially amid the immense void created by cuts to U.S. development assistance for global health programs. Given that international organizations like the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) have historically accounted for a significant percentage of overseas development assistance, the reduction in funding creates a colossal vacuum in necessary health resources.
Below is a summary of the diagnostic test results from PROJ-0075:
Medical Screening Summary — PROJ-0075
| Test | Total People Tested | Positive Cases | Rate |
| Hepatitis B | 840 | 0 | 0% |
| Hepatitis C | 840 | 1 | 0.12% |
| HIV | 500 | 3 | 0.6% |
| Malaria | 862 | 6 | 0.7% |
| Typhoid | 862 | 25 | 2.9% |
The Typhoid screening resulted in the highest number of positive cases, with 25 individuals testing positive, representing a 2.9% rate of those tested for the disease.
Actionable Steps: Preventing the Spread of Typhoid
In response to the confirmed cases of Typhoid, preventative education on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices is essential. We urge the community to implement these crucial preventive measures:
- Boil or treat drinking water before use.
- Wash hands with soap frequently, particularly before eating or cooking.
- Keep food covered and cook meals thoroughly.
A Call for Sustained Support
The successful execution of our Tamale Medical Event demonstrates our unwavering dedication to providing Food, Shelter, and Medical services to economically-disadvantaged individuals and families in Northern Ghana. Our mission to bridge the gap in essential healthcare services is more critical than ever, especially following the significant reduction in major international funding streams.
Through collective effort, continued education, and consistent screening, we aim to protect vulnerable populations and build stronger, healthier communities.
