Clean Water – 700 Gifted

A significant transformation has occurred in the quiet village of Dekpunga, nestled within the Gushegu municipality of Northern Ghana. Give Basic Needs is thrilled to share the success of the first of five completed projects, a vital initiative that has brought clean, potable water to the heart of the Dekpunga community.

Addressing a Critical Need: The Quest for Clean Water

Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, yet many communities, especially those in rural areas, face the harsh reality of water scarcity and contamination. Dekpunga, with an estimated population of 700, predominantly consisting of women and children in this polygamous practicing farming community, was grappling with the challenges of inadequate and unsafe water sources.

Give Basic Needs undertook the ambitious Dekpunga Borehole Project to address this critical need. The aim was clear: to provide a sustainable and reliable source of clean, potable water for the community members, ensuring improved health, enhanced well-being, and empowerment for the women and children who often bear the brunt of water-related challenges.

The Impact: Clean Water, Changed Lives

Completing the borehole project in Dekpunga marks a significant milestone in the community’s journey toward sustainable development. The hand pump borehole now stands as a beacon of hope, offering water and the promise of improved health, increased productivity, and a brighter future for the villagers.

Empowering Women and Children

In polygamous farming communities like Dekpunga, where women often bear the responsibility of water collection, the borehole is a game-changer. The burden of trekking long distances to fetch water from unreliable sources has been lifted, allowing women to redirect their time and energy towards other productive activities. Children, too, benefit as they now have more time for education and play, unburdened by the challenges of water scarcity.

Health and Hygiene Transformation

Access to clean water is pivotal in enhancing health and hygiene standards. With the borehole in place, the risk of waterborne diseases has significantly decreased. The community members can now enjoy the benefits of potable water, promoting overall well-being and reducing the prevalence of water-related illnesses, especially among vulnerable groups like children.

Continuing the Journey: Four Projects, Countless Lives

Completing the Dekpunga Borehole Project is just the beginning of Give Basic Needs’ commitment to making a lasting impact on communities in need. With four more projects in the pipeline, we are dedicated to ensuring that the transformative power of clean water reaches even more villages, fostering health, empowerment, and sustainable development.

As we celebrate the success of the Dekpunga Borehole Project, we invite you to join us on this journey of positive change. Together, we can turn the tide of water scarcity and empower communities to thrive.
